The aim of the Official Film of the Olympic Games is to bring a unique editorial angle to the Olympic Games experience and to capture the soul of a specific edition of the Games, while considering the broader social and cultural context that they are held in.

For each edition of the Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), in close collaboration with the Organising Committee for the Games, selects a director from among the host nation’s top filmmaking talent to create the Official Film. World-famous film directors such as Kon Ichikawa, Claude Lelouch, Milos Forman, Carlos Saura and Naomi Kawase have been commissioned in the past, to create full-length documentaries providing an artistic view of the Olympic Games.

These films reflect the people and culture of the host nation, as well as the vision of the director. They look beyond sports competition and venues – already highlighted in the broadcast footage – and cast the spotlight on the space, time and cultural ethos in which the Games are held.

As of today, this unique artistic heritage consists of 52 Official Films, which have been restored and are available to be shown to the public. They are regularly screened at cultural events, festivals and museums.
