Elevate communities
Commitment to sport and to giving back is embedded in the Utah's DNA.
Hosting the Games will elevate local communities by inspiring and igniting a passion for the Olympic and Paralympic values, especially in schools, integrating athletes into education programmes. The Games aim to foster unity in the community by embracing diversity, equity and inclusion in all Games-related activities and by sharing a common purpose to welcome the world.
Salt Lake City-Utah 2034 is fully aligned with Olympic Agenda 2020 and 2020+5, as well as regional socio-economic development plans, especially around creating long-term benefits for the region and potentially the country, for example by expanding existing sports and social programmes for young people and athletes.
The Games will help to meet the needs of a city and region that have experienced huge societal changes. Utah is the youngest state in the USA, with a median age of 31, and has one of the fastest-growing economies. Salt Lake City continues to evolve, and the downtown population is expected to double between 2022 and 2025. There is also a new digital industry that did not exist 20 years ago – Silicon Slopes.
The Games will assist efforts to drive sustainable change in Utah. The sustainability strategy will align with regional ambitions to conserve water and reduce carbon emissions. As the masterplan includes no new construction, the focus will be on supporting communities, venues, partners and key stakeholders to accelerate climate action.
To give an example, the ski resorts at Deer Valley and Park City will be almost entirely powered through solar energy from 2024. The same solar farm is supporting Salt Lake City in its goal to achieve net 100 per cent renewable energy by 2030.
