Urban sport and social good
In collaboration with diverse stakeholders, including the UN, civil society and municipal authorities, the IOC is mainstreaming sport, physical activity and active recreation in urban environments as a driver of sustainable development, and as a catalyst for improved health and quality of life, reduced gender and social inequality, and the promotion of environmental sustainability and peace in cities.
Working with our collaborators, we are:
On target for 25,000 people to benefit from regular sport and active recreation programmes designed to directly contribute to achieving the SDGs in local communities by 2025.
On target to train 125 sports, local government and community development organisations on how to maximise the positive impact of sport and active recreation through the design and management of parks, playgrounds, sports fields and community programmes by 2025.

Sport and SDG Cities
Working across five cities, in collaboration with UN Habitat’s SDG Cities initiative, the IOC is harnessing sport, physical activity and active recreation in urban environments as drivers of sustainable development. These efforts include:
- Integrating sport and physical activity metrics more substantially into cities’ analysis and planning tools
- Delivering capacity-building and training for municipal authorities and sporting bodies
- Providing seed funding for urban sports infrastructure and inclusive sports participation
Producing tools and guidelines to help local authorities integrate sport more actively into urban development processes.
