Sport, Health and Active Communities

The IOC is collaborating with sport and health stakeholders to strengthen the contribution of sport and Olympism to creating healthy and active communities. This includes increasing people’s access to safe, inclusive and health-promoting sports participation opportunities to improve their physical, mental and social health, while also supporting them to build positive social connections in and through sport.

Working with our collaborators, we are:

On target to create opportunities for 1 million people to benefit from school, community and workplace sports participation programmes that improve health and well-being by 2025.

On target to train 500 health and sports organisations to jointly deliver health-enhancing community sport programmes by 2025.

Programmes

Community Sport and Health Cooperation Initiative

Delivered in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and global health NGO PATH, the Community Sport and Health Cooperation initiative aims to increase access to health-enhancing community sport activities for over 1 million people. Key activities include:

  • Strengthening collaboration between the sport and health sector to co-deliver sport-based community programmes
  • Training coaches, teachers and community health workers to integrate health promotion and/or sport and physical activity into their programmes
  • Building the capacity of 500 organisations to deliver health-enhancing community sport.

Sport and Health Capacity Building Initiative

An initiative of the IOC and WHO, working with the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE) and the University of the West Indies (UWI), the Sport and Health Capacity Building Initiative is strengthening the capacity of the sport and health workforce to use community sport to contribute to healthy lifestyles and positive health outcomes. The programme focuses on tailored training and capacity-building for health and sport professionals to:

  • improve their knowledge of health-enhancing sport and physical activity
  • strengthen the design and delivery of policies and programmes that improve access to the physical, mental and social health benefits of regular physical activity and sports participation.
