Sport, Education and Livelihoods

The IOC collaborates with both sports, education and youth employment organisations to develop young people’s transferable skills and increase access to education, employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, particularly for marginalised groups, including women and girls.

Working with our collaborators, we are:

On target for 59,000 young people to benefit from sport-based education and livelihoods programmes by 2025.

On target to train 1,000 organisations to deliver sport-based youth employment and skills development programmes by 2025.

Programmes

Sport Education and Livelihoods in Latin America and the Caribbean

In collaboration with non-profit organisation Fundación SES, and 21 leading organisations from the sports movement, philanthropy, civil society and public authorities, the Sport Education and Livelihoods programme in Latin America and the Caribbean is delivering activities across eight countries in the region. These efforts include:

  • community sports-based programmes to develop young people’s vocational, entrepreneurial, digital and socio-emotional skills
  • capacity building for organisations and practitioners, including educators and civil servants in sport, youth development and employment
  • supporting and advocating for strengthened policy on sport and youth development
  • production of research and knowledge products on the role of sport in building sustainable livelihoods.

So far, these programmes have reached over 13,000 young people, 56% of whom are female. The proportion of programme participants reporting stronger critical and creative thinking skills rose from 36% to 74%.

Sport, Education and Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa

In collaboration with Laureus Sport for Good, the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and leading sports and social development organisations, the IOC is strengthening the role of sport-based programmes in enhancing education, economic participation and sustainable livelihoods for young people across 11 African countries. Initiated in January 2024, these efforts are:

  • increasing access to sport-based programmes that support education, employment and economic participation for over 9,000 young people
  • enhancing the capacity of 30 sports and youth-oriented organisations, as well as educators and coaches, to deliver and scale sport for sustainable livelihoods initiatives
  • strengthening sport-based curricula and policy frameworks that support employability and education.

Olympic Values Education Programme

The IOC’s Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP) aims to increase access to sport as an educational and communications tool. It includes a practical set of resources designed to inspire young people with the Olympic values.
