Proven ability
This will be the fourth time that France has hosted the Olympic Winter Games – after Chamonix 1924, Grenoble 1968 and Albertville 1992.
Three sites in the masterplan were used during Albertville 1992: the sliding track at La Plagne, the ski jump at Courchevel, and Roc de Fer downhill in Méribel. Five of the proposed competition venues have hosted major winter sports events in the past 10 years: La Plagne, La Clusaz, Grand-Bornand, Courchevel and Méribel, with Courchevel and Méribel playing host to the FIS Alpine World Championships in 2023.
Ninety-three per cent of venues will be existing or temporary, run by experienced operators of major events. Ice sports will be hosted in the Nice cluster, with all venues easily reachable around the city. Nice has hosted a number of international sports competitions, such as the World Figure Skating Championships in 2012.
French Alps 2030 aims to create a sports legacy for the community, with a new ice rink that would address the needs of local clubs. Speed skating will likely be held in an existing venue overseas, to avoid building a new venue that does not have a solid legacy case.
