Michael McNamee

Mike McNamee is a Professor of Applied Ethics in the College of Engineering at Swansea University. He has a dual background in sport (BA, MA) and philosophy (MA, PhD) and has specialised in applied ethics in the fields of sport, education, engineering, research and policing over the last 25 years. He is the Programme Chair for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Sport Ethics and Integrity, the world’s first master’s degree dedicated to sports ethics (MAiSI).

McNamee’s work ranges from theoretical scholarship to applied work. He has assisted, consulted for and/or researched for several organisations, including the European Commission; the Football Association (FA); the International Cycling Union (UCI); the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO); the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC); UK Anti-Doping; UK Sport; and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). He is also a member of WADA’s Ethics Panel.

A former president of the International Association for the Philosophy of Sport, he is the founding editor of the international research journal “Sport, Ethics and Philosophy” (2007-17), as well as the author and editor of 18 books and more than 170 published essays. His recent books include Sport, Medicine, Ethics (Routledge, 2014), the state-of-the-art Handbook of the Philosophy of Sport (Routledge, 2015) and Genetics, Bioethics and Sport (Routledge, 2018).

He has held visiting professorships at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium; Hunan Normal University, China; Linfield College, Oregon, USA; the University of Peloponnese, Greece; the Norwegian University of Sports Sciences, Oslo; the Russian International Olympic University in Sochi, Russia; the University of Canterbury, New Zealand; and the University of Gent, Belgium.
