17 December 2024 - The third edition of the advanced sports management course concluded at the end of November. Having started in June, this course brought together 18 participants, 12 of them women, representing various bodies including national federations affiliated to the NOC and the Uruguayan Paralympic Committee. The programme covered six areas of sports management: sports organisation, strategy, human resources, economics, marketing and major sports event organisation. The course was organised by the NOC with the support of Olympic Solidarity. More details here.
06 February 2023 - On 1 February, the world’s oldest Olympian, Uruguayan sailor Félix Sienra Castellanos, died at the age of 107. He had celebrated his birthday only 10 days before. Sienra Castellanos, who competed in the sailing competitions at the Olympic Games London 1948, devoted his life to the practice of law and sport. He was involved in the administration of sailing for many years, and served several terms as Vice-President of the Uruguayan NOC. In 2016, he was awarded the NOC Olympic award in gold, a distinction given to major figures in the Olympic Movement in recognition of their considerable contribution to the development of Olympic sport.
29 August 2022 - A Level I course for ITF coaches was organised recently by the Uruguayan NOC, in collaboration with the Uruguayan Tennis Association and with the support of Olympic Solidarity. A total of 21 national coaches took part in the course, which was led by Uruguayan expert Pelayo Martínez. More details here.
10 May 2022 - Thanks to Olympic Solidarity, the Uruguayan NOC has awarded a new coach training grant. Equestrian trainer Edison Quintana will now take part in the 43rd edition of the applied sports sciences course for coaches. After completing the distance learning part of the course, Quintana is now completing the in-person module at the High-Performance Sport Centre (CAR) in Barcelona (Spain), from 18 April until 12 May. As an athlete, Quintana competed in eventing at five editions of the Pan-American Games (Mar del Plata 1995, Winnipeg 1999, Rio de Janeiro 2007, Toronto 2015 and Lima 2019). 15 February 2021 - The Uruguayan NOC last year elected a new Management Board. Julio César Maglione and Washington Beltrán were re-elected as President and Secretary General respectively, and Julio Pérez Alfaro was elected as First Vice-President. The other Management Board members and the members of the Fiscal Commission and the Honour and Discipline Tribunal were also elected. More details on www.cou.org.uy.
16 November 2020 - The 2020 edition of the sports administration course organised by the NOC of Uruguay was successfully completed on 6 November. Under the auspices of Olympic Solidarity, this course was mainly designed to educate and train sports leaders in order to update their knowledge of the work carried out by the Olympic Movement, and optimise the management of the national sports organisations to which they belong. The course took place on 29 and 30 October and 5 and 6 November at the NOC headquarters, and brought together a total of 21 participants, including 12 women. More info here.
3 December 2019 - On 18 November in Montevideo, the Uruguayan NOC held the 35th edition of its Athlete of the Year awards. In his address, NOC President Julio César Maglione, also an IOC Honorary Member, congratulated the athletes and coaches (see photo) for their sporting exploits and exemplary behaviour. Nicolás Landauer (sailing) received the award for Athlete of the Year, while Nicole Frank (swimming) et Felipe Agüero (canoeing) were presented with the Young Athlete awards. 1st October 2019 - The Uruguayan NOC has announced the death of two-time Olympic bronze medallist, Juan Antonio Rodríguez (photo) on 27 September. He was 91. Rodríguez won his first medal at the Olympic Games London 1948 in the men’s double sculls, with William Jones. Four years later in Helsinki, he achieved the same result with Miguel Seijas. In 2000, the NOC presented him with its golden pin at a ceremony held at the national president’s office. Details on www.cou.org.uy.
13 June 2019 - From 20 to 24 May, the Uruguayan NOC, in cooperation with the national sailing federation, organised a level 2 course for sailing coaches. Placed under the auspices of Olympic Solidarity, the course was attended by 33 national coaches and led by Eduardo Sylvestre, World Sailing regional development coordinator, and Hernán Vilá, the World Sailing expert who coached the Argentinian sailing team for six editions of the Olympic Games. 18 April 2019 - With the help of Olympic Solidarity, the Uruguayan NOC has set up a scholarship for coaches. Taking advantage of this, Sebastián Allende (centre of photo) is currently taking part in the 41st course in sciences applied to sport, a course for coaches taking place from 4 April to 2 July 2019 in Barcelona (Spain). Before leaving for Spain, he was received by NOC President and IOC honorary member Julio Cesar Maglione (left) and Lionel de Mello, President of the Uruguayan Athletics Federation (right). 25 February 2019 - The 2019 sports management course organised by the NOC of Uruguay under the auspices of Olympic Solidarity was successfully held on 5, 7, 12 and 14 February at the NOC headquarters. A total of 27 people attended this course, which was brought to a close by the National Sports Secretary, Fernando Cáceres, and NOC President Julio César Maglione, who is also an IOC Honorary Member. 10 December 2018 - On 19 November the Uruguayan NOC celebrated its 95th anniversary and the 34th award ceremony for the best sporting performances of the year. NOC President and IOC Honorary Member Julio César Maglione gave a speech,and a video message from the IOC President was played. Emiliano Lasa (long jump) was awarded the title of Athlete of the Year, whileDahiana López (discus) and Fabián Coito (football coach) were presented with awards for thebest young athlete and the best technician respectively.
