30 October 2024 - Maximilian Maeder, an 18-year-old kite foiler, was recently honoured at the SNOC Major Games Programme (MAP) Awards Presentation and Appreciation Dinner for the Olympic Games Paris 2024. He won a bronze medal in the men’s kite event off the coast of Marseille, marking a historic milestone as Singapore’s first Olympic sailing medallist. The ceremony was attended by Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations, and SNOC President Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Second Minister for Law, alongside a Team Singapore contingent. The SNOC’s MAP is a programme designed to reward Singaporean athletes who bring home medals from major events like the SEA Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and the Olympic Games. 12 June 2024 - Darren Ong (bowling) and Shanti Pereira (athletics) were named Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year 2024 at the Singapore Sports Awards Ceremony held on 3 June. Distributed by the SNOC and Sport Singapore, the awards recognise the achievements of the athletes, teams and others who are helping to shape the Sporting Singapore sports blueprint. 03 June 2024 - This year, more than 400 student-athletes in 34 sports have been awarded the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship. The recipients in the four categories – primary, secondary, tertiary and under-18 high performance – received cash scholarships which will go towards supporting their sport- and school-related expenses. The awards were presented by SNOC President Grace Fu, who is also the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations; and the Foundation Chairman and IOC Vice- President Ser Miang Ng. They were joined by three-time Olympic champion and world champion swimmer Anthony Ervin from the USA, who also shared stories from his athlete journey. Since 2011, 4,923 scholarships have been disbursed to support Singapore sporting talent, including seven aspiring 2024 Olympians. Detailed info here.
30 April 2024 - The finalists of the 2024 Singapore Sports Awards (SSA) were revealed on 23 April by the SSA selection committees. Organised by the SNOC and Sport Singapore, the 2024 SSA will honour the most deserving individuals and teams in sport for the year 2023. The winners will be announced at the SSA presentation ceremony on the evening of 3 June. Full details here, including the list of finalists.
22 April 2024 - Tan Wearn Haw has been appointed by the SNOC to lead the Team Singapore contingent at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. Tan, a multi-medallist at the South East Asian and Asian Games, competed in sailing at the Olympic Games Sydney 2000. A former CEO of the Singapore Sailing Federation and founding Director of the National Youth Sports Institute, he also volunteers on various non-profit organisations including the Global E-Sport Federation, and the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship Committee. **27 February 2024 - **The SNOC has announced that eight sports figures – three athletes and five sports leaders – were inducted into the Singapore Sport Hall of Fame at the Istana (office of the President of the Republic of Singapore) at the beginning of February. The Sport Hall of Fame celebrates the exceptional achievements and contributions of Singapore’s sporting heroes. It is the first time that sports leaders have received this recognition since the Hall of Fame’s inception in 1985. The ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic of Singapore, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, the SNOC President Grace Fu and the Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Edwin Tong. 30 october 2023 - Grace Fu has been recently co-opted as a member to the SNOC Executive Committee. She is a Member of Parliament and currently serves as the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment. She was appointed to oversee the nation’s sports agenda for 2015-20 when she served as the Minister for Culture, Community and Youth. More details here.
04 September 2023 - Sheik Farhan Sheik Alau’ddin (pencak silat) and Feng Tianwei (table tennis) were named Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year 2023 at the Singapore Sports Awards ceremony, organised by the SNOC and Sport Singapore. The awards recognise the achievements of athletes and teams, and those who help shape Sporting Singapore. The list of winners can be found here.
24 july 2023 - The SNOC has reported that 478 student athletes from 37 sports received the 2023 Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship. This year, the scholarship was also awarded to a record 99 recipients in the high-performance under-18 category. Since 2011, 4,519 scholarships have been granted to help promising young athletes achieve their goals in sports excellence and support outstanding young athletes from financially challenged backgrounds. 16 March 2023 - At the end of February, more than 150 Asian Games-bound athletes joined the community on a run around the vicinity of the Singapore Sports Hub at the Singapore edition of the Hangzhou Fun Run, organised by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the SNOC. Since 2004, the OCA has been organising a series of fun runs in various Asian cities to promote the Asian Games prior to the upcoming edition – the 2023 edition will be held in Hangzhou (China) from 23 September to 8 October. The 3km run was flagged off by SNOC President Tan Chuan-Jin. The Team Singapore’s chefs de mission for the Asian Games were also introduced on this occasion. Full details here. 14 November 2022 - Loh Kean Yew (badminton) and Yu Mengyu (table tennis) were named Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year 2022 at the Singapore Sports Awards ceremony (photo), organised by the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) and Sport Singapore. The awards recognise the achievements of the athletes, teams and those who help shape Sporting Singapore. SNOC President Tan Chuan-Jin, who is also Speaker of the Singapore Parliament, was the guest of honour and presented the awards to the winners. More info at www.singaporeolympics.com.
31 May 2021 - The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) has co-opted Forrest Li (see photo) as a member of its Executive Committee. Li is the Founder, Chairman and Group CEO of Sea Limited, a leading global consumer internet company founded and based in Singapore. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Singapore Economic Development Board and serves on the Board of Trustees for the National University of Singapore, and on the Advisory Council of Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. 01 February 2021 - The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) presented the 2019 IOC Trophy “Sport and Sustainable Architecture” to Our Tampines Hub (OTH) on 21 December. Chris Chan (l. in photo), Secretary-General of the SNOC, presented the Trophy to OTH Senior Director Suhaimi Rafdi (centre). They were joined by IOC Vice-President Ng Ser Miang (r.). Our Tampines Hub is Singapore’s first and largest integrated community and lifestyle hub that brings together multiple agencies to offer a comprehensive and diverse range of services, programmes and facilities. 30 October 2020 - Peter Gilchrist (cue sports) and Cherie Tan (bowling) were named Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year 2020 at the Singapore Sports Awards ceremony, organised by the Singapore National Olympic Council and Sport Singapore. The awards honoured the most deserving individuals and teams in sport from the past year, and celebrated those who helped shape Sporting Singapore. The NOC President, Tan Chuan-Jin, was the guest of honour at the event and presented the awards in the various categories, with the Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Edwin Tong. 22 May 2020 - The Singapore NOC announced that this year, 289 youth athletes representing 32 sports will receive the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship. Athletes from road cycling, ice hockey, jiu-jitsu, softball and water polo will also feature in the high performance under-18 category for the first time. Traditionally, the Scholarship recipients will attend a ceremony to receive their awards – particularly so as the Scholarship hits a 10th year milestone. In these times of the Covid-19 outbreak, celebrations will be muted and the ceremony, like many others, will not be held so as to comply with the Government’s social distancing measures. In 10 years, 2,930 scholarships have been awarded to athletes from 54 sports. More info here.
02 September 2019 - The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) has announced that Ben Tan (see photo) has been appointed Chef de Mission for Team Singapore at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Tan, a gold medallist in sailing at the Southeast Asian Games and Asian Games, competed in the Laser event at the Olympic Games Atlanta 1996. In 2005, he was named Chair of the first SNOC Athletes’ Commission, and was elected SNOC Vice-President in 2018. He has been part of the Singapore Sailing Federation since 2002. Tan has a background in sports medicine and currently serves as Chair of World Sailing’s Medical Commission. More detailshere.
15 July 2019 - The 2018 IOC “Olympism in Action” Trophy has been awarded to Singapore philanthropist Peter Lim (2nd from right in photo) in recognition of his important contribution to sport and the community. He was presented with the Trophy by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Heng Swee Keat (3rd), in the presence of IOC Executive Board member Ser Miang Ng (right), during the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship awards ceremony. This year, 280 student-athletes in 44 sports from 83 schools will receive scholarships for under-18-year-olds. More details here on the Singapore National Olympic Council website. Mr Lim has pledged to continue supporting young Singapore athletes for another 10 years from 2021 to 2030, and will also start a new community project focused on helping children from less privileged backgrounds, to help them reach their potential. 08 July 2019 - On 29 June, more than 1,500 participants gathered at the Kallang Practice Track and Singapore Sports Hub to celebrate Olympic Day, which this year was organised in conjunction with the Singapore Tennis Festival. The participants walked alongside Olympians such as C. Kunalan (athletics), Ajit Singh (hockey) and Tao Li (swimming). Ser Miang Ng, IOC Executive Board member and Chairman of the Singapore Olympic Foundation, got the walk underway at the National Stadium. He was joined by Angelita Teo, who will become the new director of The Olympic Museum in Lausanne in October; Chiang Hock Woon, Deputy Chief Executive of Sport Singapore; and Jessie Phua, Tan Eng Liang, Edwin Lee and Chris Chan, members of the Executive Committee of the Singapore National Olympic Council. 27 May 2019 - Joseph Schooling (swimming) and Martina Veloso (shooting) were named, respectively, sportsman and sportswoman of the year for 2019 at the Singapore Sports Awards ceremony, organised by the NOC of Singapore and Sport Singaport. The awards honour the most deserving individuals and teams in sport from the past year. 01 April 2019 - Team Singapore gymnast Tamara Ong received a sports scholarship from the NTUC FairPrice Foundation in recognition for her gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018. Eighteen athletes represented Team Singapore in ten sports in Buenos Aires, and returned with one gold medal, one national record and five personal best performances. As she is currently studying and training in Melbourne (Australia), Ong was represented by Karen Norden, General Manager of Singapore Gymnastics, who received the scholarship from Seah Kian Peng, the Chief Executive of NTUC FairPrice and Director of the Singapore Olympic Foundation. The ceremony was held in the presence of Tan Chuan-Jin, Speaker of Parliament and Singapore NOC President, Chef de Mission Tao Li, and the rest of the Singapore contingent. More info here.
27 July 2018 - Tan Chuan-Jin (see photo) was re-elected as the President of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) at its Annual General Meeting in June. He will be serving his second term as President until 2022. Four vice-presidents were also elected to the Executive Committee: Milan Kwee, Benedict Tan, Tan Eng Liang and Jessie Phua. 23 July 2018 - Joseph Schooling (swimming) and Feng Tianwei (table tennis) were awarded the titles of Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year in Singapore’s annual sports prize awards. The awards ceremony, organised by the NOC of Singapore, is intended to reward the most deserving individuals and teams of the year. NOC President Tan Chuan-Jin, the guest of honour, presented the prizes along with Grace Fu, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth. More details here.
11 June 2018 - The NOC of Singapore reports that 269 student-athletes from 30 sports received the Singapore Olympic Foundation (SOF)-Peter Lim Scholarship, with a number of Asian Games and Youth Olympic Games aspirants among the recipients. The scholarships will go towards covering their sport- and school-related expenses. The Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Grace Fu, was the guest of honour at the ceremony. She was joined by two special guests – Joseph Schooling, Olympic swimming champion and scholarship recipient in 2012, and Koji Murofushi, Olympic and world champion in the hammer throw and current Sports Director for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
