Course Objectives
What the course covers:
Clinicians, after taking this course, will be able to:
- Recognizepatterns of respiratory illness, risk factors and key clinical features of acute respiratory illness in athletes
- Perform, and interpret appropriate special tests to diagnose respiratory conditions in high level athletes in the clinic and in the field that distinguish infectious respiratory conditions, asthma, and exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction.
- Implementevidence-based therapeutic and prevention strategies to care for high-level athletes with acute respiratory illness.
- Collaborate with respiratory specialists by recognizing and acquiring field data related to challenging diagnostic and therapeutic situations.
The course includes practical demonstrations, case discussions and break-out groups to tailor the content to the needs and requirements of attendees.
Emphasis will be placed on helping attendees to:
- Become confident in assessing athletes with respiratory issues and untangling the different causes of breathing difficulties in an athlete.

- Ensure that athletes, under their care with asthma, are on the right treatment and are using this in the best way possible.
- Experience practical sessions, to develop hands-on experience with investigations that are commonly used to assess respiratory health in athletes. Learn about simple tools that can be deployed to help detect problems in a squad-based setting.
