What the course covers:

Clinicians, after taking this course, will be able to:

  • Recognizepatterns of respiratory illness, risk factors and key clinical features of acute respiratory illness in athletes
  • Perform, and interpret appropriate special tests to diagnose respiratory conditions in high level athletes in the clinic and in the field that distinguish infectious respiratory conditions, asthma, and exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction.
  • Implementevidence-based therapeutic and prevention strategies to care for high-level athletes with acute respiratory illness.
  • Collaborate with respiratory specialists by recognizing and acquiring field data related to challenging diagnostic and therapeutic situations.

The course includes practical demonstrations, case discussions and break-out groups to tailor the content to the needs and requirements of attendees.

Emphasis will be placed on helping attendees to:

  1. Become confident in assessing athletes with respiratory issues and untangling the different causes of breathing difficulties in an athlete.
  2. Understand how high-quality respiratory care requires a ‘systematic approach’, presenting evidence of the importance of considering all sections of the respiratory system, i.e. from the nose to the lower airways.
  3. Ensure that athletes, under their care with asthma, are on the right treatment and are using this in the best way possible.
  4. Experience practical sessions, to develop hands-on experience with investigations that are commonly used to assess respiratory health in athletes. Learn about simple tools that can be deployed to help detect problems in a squad-based setting.
  5. Rapidly assess athletes with infective symptoms and learn how to safely lead return to sport guidance.
