Summary

Since 1996, the British Olympic Foundation has produced educational kits for primary and secondary school teachers. These folders contain ideas for classroom activities as well as information on the Olympic Movement and the Games.

Goals

The main objective of this program is to support schools in their Olympic education activities and to provide basic information about Olympism for people of all ages.

Steps

The education kit has two sections: activities to practice with students and background information on Olympism. The first part gives teachers ideas and suggestions for activities to transmit the Olympic ideals by working on themes such as the environment, marketing, gender equality or doping. The second part of the educational pack develops teachers' knowledge of the Olympic Movement - its ideals, its history, its functioning, its symbols... - and of the past and future Olympic Games. Specific content is also created for each edition of the Summer and Winter Games, providing specific information on the host city and country. The educational kit is accompanied by a series of posters. Most of the material offered is adapted to the official school curricula of the different age groups.

Practical advice

When creating this educational material, we were well aware of the fact that we wanted to involve the whole school and touch all teaching subjects. We believe that the Olympic values are applicable to anyone who chooses to implement them and are not limited to physical education classes. The educational material has been designed in such a way that it can be modified to suit all age groups. The key factor for the use of these resources is to have the objective of disseminating and understanding the Olympic values of Excellence, Respect and Friendship and to link these values to all school activities.

The use of this pedagogical material can contribute to the achievement of the objectives enshrined both in the mission of the schools and in the education programs at the national level.
