New case study: Resourcing Security Personnel for an Olympic and Paralympic Games – The Public-Private Sector Mix

This new case study looks at a challenge faced by OCOGs where the planning and management of security are implemented strategically by public security authorities (such as the police), but are executed to a large degree by private security companies. The interface between these two can be problematic due to differences in cultures, the legal basis to operate and human rights, etc. Roles and responsibilities between private and public security entities can also be unclear without proper communication and collaboration. Through learning from industry experts, this case study examines what strategies are needed to assess security personnel resourcing needs and determine “who does what” between public agencies and private security enterprises. It considers the advantages and challenges of utilising private security companies for a Games edition as part of the “public-private sector mix” and outlines best practices in engaging with them effectively in order to provide a safe and secure environment.

Updated case study: Understanding the IOC Culture – A Guide for OCOGs

This case study was updated recently and aims to help current and future OCOGs, as well as new IOC employees, get the most out of their working relationship with the organisation across a range of areas, such as project management, decision-making processes, communication methods, formality levels and overall organisational anthropology. It looks at key areas of best practice when it comes to understanding how the IOC operates by examining the organisation’s working culture. Furthermore, it assesses how the Olympic Agenda 2020 and 2020+5 roadmaps have influenced working practices, and how the impact of COVID‐19 has been mitigated.
