Terre de Jeux 2024 – A label to ensure Paris 2024 will be Games for the whole of France

Launched by Paris 2024 in June 2019, the Terre de Jeux 2024 label is available to all French local authorities and sports organisations. Designed in close cooperation with local stakeholders, the label offers everyone in the country the opportunity to contribute, at their own level, to three overarching objectives: celebration, to allow everyone to experience the emotional power of the Games; legacy, to change the everyday lives of French people through sport; and engagement, so that the Games project benefits as many people as possible.

“I am proud to unveil, alongside François Baroin, the list of the first 500 towns and cities to be granted the Terre de Jeux 2024 label,” said Paris 2024 President Estanguet. “This large, diverse group testifies to the incredible enthusiasm that the Games are generating in all areas of France. Today, the Paris 2024 family has grown to include the inhabitants of all these communes, and I’m looking forward to meeting them over the next five years!

Terre de Jeux 2024 is intended to create a community of local stakeholders who firmly believe that sport changes lives. The members of this community will be able to learn from the experiences of the network as a whole, showcase the best of their town or city and shine a spotlight on the initiatives and projects being carried out in their local area. The areas that have been granted the label undertake to develop initiatives to promote sport and the Games to their inhabitants, in line with the Olympic Charter and the Paris 2024 Code of Ethics.

“The Terre de Jeux 2024 label is a remarkable opportunity for local authorities to fully engage with the notion of Games legacy by developing sport for all,” said AMF President Baroin. “The Games are more than a sports event; they represent an exciting challenge for the country and will be a success thanks to the involvement of all stakeholders – the public and economic sectors, associations and the general public.”

Excitement continues to grow

Since the label was officially launched in June 2019, the Paris 2024 Organising Committee has received nearly 1,000 applications, demonstrating that the Games are already generating excitement throughout the country, and that all areas of France feel that they can be part of the project.

Granting the Terre de Jeux 2024 label to this first group of 500 communes is a way to reward this enthusiasm and encourage all local authorities to join the adventure.

More towns and cities will be awarded the label over the coming weeks, as and when the applications are examined by the Paris 2024 teams.

A group that reflects the label itself: open, diverse and enthusiastic

The 500 communes and intercommunal administrative entities that make up this first group represent a broad range of areas from mainland France and its overseas territories. They are primarily medium-sized towns – 48 per cent have between 10,000 and 50,000 inhabitants, while 33 per cent have fewer than 10,000 inhabitants, and 9 per cent have fewer than 2,500. Of the 500 towns and cities that have received the label, 416 have also applied to become Games Preparation Centres and make their facilities available to foreign delegations. The first commune to be awarded the label, Bellefosse, is a village with 149 inhabitants located 300km from Paris, close to the forests of the Vosges. With its football pitch and swimming pool, Bellefosse is determined to tap into the unique energy of the Games and be part of the key aspects of the project. As this example shows, the Olympic Games Paris 2024 are for all local authorities across the country, and all of them are encouraged to apply for the label!
