It's All About Prevention: State-of-the-Art Sessions You Can't Miss!
In a world where prevention is better than cure, we are thrilled to announce a series of state-of-the-art 90-minute symposia focusing on injury and illness prevention in sport as a pivotal part of the scientific programme for the 7th IOC World Conference.
Out of over 160 submissions, only 15 top-tier proposals for symposia have been accepted on the programme of the Conference, showcasing a diverse range aspects of injury and illness prevention in sport.

Forget Everything You’ve Learned: Preventing Injury in the Shoulders of Overhead Athletes – Join Rod Whiteley, Assistant Director at Aspetar, Lori Michener from USC and others to hear more about specific injury-prevention strategies for athletes who place unique demands on their shoulders. The speakers will cover topics such as rotational range of motion, shoulder instability, strengthening programmes, subscapularis injury, and the importance of the trunk and legs in preventing shoulder injury.

Running away from injuries – what can we do? There is an urgent need for prevention tools to decrease the incidence of running-related injuries worldwide. Their causes are many and complex, and understanding etiology and risk factors is crucial for prevention. In this symposium, renowned researchers in the field will present the latest state-of-the-art knowledge in running and injury prevention, including the role of shoes and footwear modification with respect to injuries. The speakers, led by Marienke Van Middelkoop from Erasmus MC Medical University Centre in Rotterdam, will discuss the challenges of injury prevention and the role of training load using world-leading methods.

Injury and Illness Prevention for Performance – Applying the Principles of Risk Management to Elite Sports - The IP2 NetWork programme has been developed based on a risk management framework, with key principles including stakeholder ownership, data-driven development, and easy access to implementation tools. Bahar Hassanmirzaei, joined by Karim Chamari, Roald Bahr and colleagues from Aspetar and the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Centre, will discuss the science and experience behind this programme, including risk management planning and the creation of multi-component programmes based on end-user input.

Avoiding the “REDs” Card: Implementing the New IOC REDs Consensus Findings to Prevent Athlete Injury and Illness - This symposium, led by Margo Mountjoy and Kathryn Ackerman, will cover new advances in science related to Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs). The session will cover prevention, clinical guidelines for measuring body composition, and a new clinical assessment tool. The authors of the symposium are members of the IOC Consensus Writing Group on REDs.

Adapted Sport - The Spectrum of Prevention from Grass-Roots Initiatives to Elite Athlete Care - chaired by Wayne Derman, this symposium will be held with speakers from different IOC Research Centres (Stellenbosch, Aspetar, Oslo and Amsterdam) to discuss risk factor identification, preparticipation screening, tailored injury prevention, educating team doctors, and protecting the shoulder in Para sports. The lectures will cover topics such as accurately detailing the impairment phenotype of Paralympic athletes, adapting preparticipation health evaluations for different health challenges, providing tailored injury prevention for athletes with physical impairments, addressing health problems related to disabilities in addition to sport-related injuries, and preventing shoulder injuries in Para athletes.
