Youth sport participation
Every year, the LA84 Foundation engages thousands of people in sport and education activities. Between 1984 and 2017, the Foundation reached more than three million young people and their families, with a focus on female participation: women and girls represent an encouraging 42 per cent of those taking part. The organisation also supported over 2,500 not-for-profit partners, and helped train over 90,000 coaches, remaining a nationally recognised leader in supporting youth sport programmes and public education.
The LA84 Foundation was created with the surplus from the Olympic Games to promote and advocate for sports participation in Southern California. It supports hundreds of non-profit youth sports organisations throughout the region each year; trains coaches; and hosts sports conferences. The Foundation also commissions research on the role of sport in positive youth development and maintains one of the world’s largest sports libraries.
Its ethos centres around levelling the playing field so that sport is accessible to all children, to transform lives and communities.
