“We not only want people to come to the Olympic Games, we also want to take the Games to the people. We want to make Olympic sport as accessible and engaging as possible; we want to create an environment where they are both entertained and inspired, where they can witness history in the making and then get active themselves. Today’s announcement by Tokyo 2020 is very exciting. But stay tuned, this is just the start,” said IOC Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi.

Urban Festival

At the Urban Festival, the crowd will not only cheer on their favourite BMX racing, BMX freestyle and skateboarding athletes, they will also get the chance to get active in the exact same spot as their Olympic heroes. That’s right. Fans headed to the Urban Festival at the Ariake Urban Sports Park will be closer than ever to the action and could even opt to ride or skate in the same field of play. They will also be treated to exhibition performances.

Playground

Not having a ticket won’t mean missing out on Olympic action at the Playground. Adjacent to the  Aomi Urban Sports Park, the space will include outdoor warm-up areas where visitors can watch 3x3 basketball players and sport climbing athletes while they get ready. At the Playground, visitors will also be invited to get sporty with a climb or casual pick-up game in the exact same venues.

Olympic Promenade

The Olympic Promenade will be located in the Centre Promenade Park, which links the Daiba and Aomi areas with the Ariake area, blending both new and traditional sports to offer something for everyone.

The Olympic and Paralympic cauldron will be set up on the Promenade, and will include sports and artistic performance areas, cool spots, rest areas, and eating and drinking spaces for spectators as they stroll by. It will be an open area that everyone can visit to enjoy the Games.

Tokyo Waterfront City also features several Olympic competition venues, a partner showcasing area and a Tokyo 2020 megastore, making this one location not to miss out on next year.

Riding new waves

The festival fun won’t be limited to city dwellers in one year’s time. Tokyo 2020 is also working on plans to create a surfing festival atmosphere for the sport’s debut at the Olympic Games. Stay tuned, as details will be revealed soon.
