The 1972 Olympic memories live on thanks to the Sapporo Olympic Museum.

The museum was built in 2000 and reopened in 2017, at the foot of the Okurayama ski jump hill. Part of the Olympic Museums Network, it aims to educate visitors about winter sports and encourage them to practise them. It features a large collection of Sapporo 1972 Olympic memorabilia, including athlete equipment and clothing, and tells the story of the 11 days of action.

Visitors can see a Paradise Hütte, which was Japan’s first western-style mountain cabin, and step into the athletes’ shoes by trying simulations of some of the sports and disciplines on the Sapporo Winter Games programme, including ski jump, cross-country skiing, speed skating and bobsleigh.

The success of the simulators has inspired other Olympic Museums around the world to include them in their exhibitions.
