The Olympic Academy
The Olympic Games Athens 2004 added further prestige to the International Olympic Academy in Olympia.
Founded in 1949, the Academy’s mission is to preserve and spread the principles of the Olympic spirit, to study and implement the educational and social principles of Olympism, and to consolidate the scientific basis of the Olympic ideal.
During the Olympic Games Athens 2004, the Academy was used as the Olympic Village for athletes and officials of the Olympic shotput competitions, which took place in Olympia. The new conference centre at the Academy was used as a media work area and for press conferences.
Since 2004, the building housing the Historical Archives of the Athens 2004 Organising Committee, situated on the premises of the Academy, has been operating as a museum. It includes audio-visual and digitised content, as well as artefacts from the 2004 Olympic Games. The project was financed by the IOC, while the implementation was carried out by a non-profit organisation, established for that purpose.
