Built for St Moritz 1928 and used again at the 1948 Games, the Olympic Stadium hosted recreational and summer sports up to the 1980s. It then fell into disrepair and lay empty until 2006, when its main building was bought by Swiss designer Rolf Sachs. He brought the building back to life, preserving as much of the original structure as he could and restoring its old windows.
The interior features many reminders of St Moritz’s two Olympic Winter Games, including black-and-white photographs and an original gold medal from the 1948 Games.
The former ice rink in front of the building is owned by the Kulm Hotel and is rented out to the local golf club, which uses it as a driving range. It also hosts occasional charity cricket matches, which are popular with St Moritz’s sizeable British community.
The stadium was the venue for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the speed skating and figure skating competitions, and the ice hockey medal matches at both the 1928 and 1948 Games.
