Samsung helping to make Rio 2016 the most connected Olympic Games ever

As the Worldwide Olympic Partner in the Wireless Communications Equipment category, Samsung is providing its cutting-edge mobile products to the Olympic Games Rio 2016 to ensure these are the most connected Olympic Games ever.

Today IOC President Thomas Bach visited Samsung’s Galaxy Studio on the Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro. He said: “Samsung’s technology has helped to engage with fans and especially young people around the world. The IOC is grateful for their partnership in providing Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Games Limited Edition to the athletes that will compete in Rio de Janeiro. This will enable the athletes to connect with their friends, family and fans and share their amazing experience at the Olympic Games. With Samsung’s support, we look forward to inspire people everywhere with Olympic Values, the unique experience of the Olympic Games and the power of sport”.

In collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Samsung has presented 12,500 Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Games Limited Edition mobile phones to athletes competing in the Olympic Games Rio 2016. The commemorative smartphones incorporate an Olympic Games design, featuring a custom colour-way that includes the five official colours of the Olympic rings, and will help Olympians enhance their experiences in Rio by allowing them to communicate with friends and family around the world more conveniently.

“Samsung believes that meaningful human progress is fuelled by those daring to defy barriers and, as a Worldwide Olympic Partner, we celebrate this spirit that is within all athletes,” says Younghee Lee, Executive Vice President of Global Marketing, Samsung Mobile Communications Business. “In collaboration with the IOC, Samsung aims to create breakthrough experiences for athletes, consumers, and fans by bringing the most advanced mobile products to the Olympic Games Rio 2016.”

Samsung has also partnered with the local Organising Committee to develop the official Rio 2016 app, which provides a range of features to help users better enjoy the Olympic Games, including the competition schedule, venue and event information, results, medal counts, and real-time updates across all Olympic sports.

Throughout the Games, the company’s corporate showcase pavilion – the Samsung Galaxy Studio – is also offering entertainment for consumers, athletes and fans with a variety of interactive experiences. Visitors are able to engage with Samsung’s latest mobile products and Gear VR technology, while a unique 4D VR (virtual reality) offering will allow studio guests to feel the exhilaration of Olympic sports such as mountain biking and kayaking. Three Samsung Galaxy Studios are operating during the Games, stationed in the Olympic Park, Athletes’ Village and Main Press Centre (MPC), while Studio activations are also taking place throughout key cities in Brazil.

As part of its commitment to spread the Olympic spirit ahead of the Olympic Games Rio 2016, Samsung also teamed up with Academy Award-winning director Morgan Neville to create ‘A Fighting Chance – a documentary short that tells the untold stories of four athletes on their quest to overcome remarkable odds to compete at the Olympic Games Rio 2016. 

In addition, Samsung released two TV/digital spots. ‘The Chant’ tells a compelling story of personal progress and celebrates a nation’s first Olympic Games, while the ‘International Anthem’ celebrates the collective progress of those breaking down boundaries to express unity and harmony.
