#OlympicDay 23 June 2015 contest winner

This year, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) offered a chance to win a trip for two to Rio de Janeiro in December for a sneak peek of the Olympic Park ahead of next summer’s Olympic Games. To take part, the general public had to get active, capture the moment with a photo or video, and share it with us using the hashtag #OlympicDay.

#OlympicDay on Twitter alone was posted 36,000 times, and over 21,000 photos were recorded with a potential impression reach of over 178 million. Olympians, fans, volunteers, celebrities, coaches and many organisations all got behind the event, sharing online their physical activities for Olympic Day; and in the United States, #OlympicDay trended on both Twitter and Instagram.

And the winner is …. Stephen Lund from Victoria, Canada. Stephen sketched out #OlympicDay on a bicycle, which took him over 41 minutes with an energy output of 354 KJ travelling a distance of 17.2 km.

We asked Stephen why he decided to draw #OlympicDay in the city of Victoria, and he said that he wanted to inspire others to get active for #OlympicDay. For Stephen it’s not just about doing sport, it’s also about creating something new: Fitness Art: “It’s a way for people to physically and creatively immerse themselves in the city they call home. It’s an easy, inviting way to get healthier and happier by reframing ho-humdrum exercise as creative exploration and artistic adventuring. It’s the convergence of art, exercise and technology in a concept that’s as accessible as it is inspiring, and as achievable as it is enticing.”

Stephen has done many other sketches (http://gpsdoodles.com/), and his average distance per doodle is about 70 km (43.5 miles). The longest one he ever did is around 223 km (137 miles), and is entitled “Mermaid of the Salish Sea”.

Stay tuned for more sketches from Stephen, as he will be heading to Rio de Janeiro near the end of this year where he will get a firsthand look of the Olympic Park before the next Olympic Games kick off.

What is Olympic Day?

Olympic Day marks the day that the Olympic Games were revived in 1894. With the help of National Olympic Committees, International Sports Federations and the Organising Committees for the Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee encourages the general public to get off the couch and get active for #OlympicDay.
