Olympic Truce
The Torino 2006 Organising Committee, TOROC, created various initiatives within the Olympic Truce Programme to support values including cooperation, development and international solidarity.
For example, in collaboration with UNICEF, the programme promoted the Solidarity Text Message Project. This raised more than EUR 500,000 which helped immunise 25,000 children living in countries at war against polio, measles and meningitis.
Similarly, the Clearing Sarajevo '84 Olympic Sites from Landmines project aided the removal of landmines from the Olympic district of Sarajevo. A EUR 150,000 contribution from TOROC and the Piedmont municipalities helped to raise awareness about the Olympic host city, destroyed during the Bosnian war in the early 1990s.
