Olympic Stadium
The upgrading of the Olympic Stadium for the Olympic Games Athens 2004 was completed so as to ensure it remained in regular use as a Greek national arena following the event.
The stadium was used for the athletic events, football gold medal matches as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2004 Olympic Games.
Originally built in 1980, the stadium opened in 1982 for the European Athletics Championships. The Athens 2004 Organising Committee and the Ministry of Culture engaged Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava to design an upgrade of the stadium’s roof for the Olympic Games. Since the Olympic Games, the venue has been the home of Greek Super League football team AEK Athens and the Greek national team. It also hosts track and field competitions as well as music concerts.
