The International Olympic Committee (IOC) congratulates three-time Olympic runner and long-time advocate of peace, women’s rights and education Tegla Loroupe on winning the Billie Jean King Contribution Award at the Women’s Sports Foundation’s 35th Annual Salute to Women in Sports awards in New York this weekend.

Loroupe, who participated in the Olympic Games of Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000, was feted for her efforts placing sport at the service of humanity.

Loroupe, who participated in the [Olympic Games](http://www.olympic.org/olympic-games) of [Barcelona 1992](http://www.olympic.org/barcelona-1992-summer-olympics), [Atlanta 1996](http://www.olympic.org/atlanta-1996-summer-olympics) and [Sydney 2000](http://www.olympic.org/sydney-2000-summer-olympics), was feted for her efforts placing sport at the service of humanity\.

After winning three world half marathons, Loroupe used her prize money to establish the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation in 2003\. The Kenyan runner has dedicated her post\-athletics career to use sport to further peace and development around the world, in particular in areas affected by conflict and civil unrest\.

A United Nations and UNICEF Ambassador, Loroupe has long championed the [Olympic values](http://www.olympic.org/olympism-in-action) in her work around the globe\. She continues to be a strong and valuable voice for the power of sport and the Olympic Movement\.
