Covering a large area (1,250 x 130m), the Canal was designed by the engineer Josep Masso and financed by the Institut Català del Sol and the Organising Committee. It was built in the town of Castelldefels, one of the subsites of the Olympic Games Barcelona 1992.

Today, the Canal is managed by a private and public fund and has developed a rich variety of sports and leisure activities, targeting families and hosting international sporting events.
