LA 2028 moves forward with focus on partnership, legacy, inspiration and innovation
LA 2028 updated representatives of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) on their first coordinated visit to Los Angeles since the city was awarded the Olympic Games 2028 on its vision to implement an innovative Games plan that will benefit Angelenos for decades to come.
“We are very pleased to see the steps LA 2028 has taken since being awarded the Olympic Games,” said IOC Coordination Commission Chair Patrick Baumann. “LA 2028’s focus in the last year has been on developing plans to deliver unique and unforgettable Games that are also in line with Olympic Agenda 2020’s the New Norm. This includes a continued focus on legacy while laying the foundation for a fiscally responsible, values-led organisation that is staffed with a knowledgeable, dynamic team.”
As a part of the Tripartite Agreement negotiations, LA 2028 and the IOC agreed that up to USD 160 million would be invested in local youth sports in the decade leading up to the Games.
During its two-day visit, the IOC heard updates on LA’s progress towards ensuring its youth sports programme will provide maximum benefits to its citizens, with further details set to be put forward next year.
Sustainability is also at the heart of Los Angeles 2028’s plans, with a proposal to heavily utilise existing venues for the Games. As such, the IOC delegation visited three facilities, each of which has received major privately funded updates since the IOC’s last visit to LA during the Evaluation Commission visit in 2017, including LA Stadium, the Banc of California Stadium and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
In addition to laying out the key milestones and foundation for the structure of its Organising Committee, LA 2028 has entered a commercial Joint Venture with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). In the lead-up to 2019, the organisations’ leadership will create the inventory to be sold and develop the structure of the portfolio.
In keeping with this spirit of partnership, LA has also been actively participating in meetings with Paris 2024 and the IOC to identify further areas of collaboration that will mutually benefit each edition of the Games.
