IOC publishes paper on integrity and 2022 Annual Report
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently released two publications which highlight its strategy and activities in the important field of integrity. First, the paper “Integrity in sport: IOC approach”, published in May, summarises the work led by the IOC to support the Olympic Movement in upholding ethical principles, in particular the Basic Universal Principles of Good Governance in the Olympic Movement (BUPGG), and reducing the prevalence of threats to the integrity of sport. The document outlines the IOC’s approach in the fields of anti-corruption; good governance; financial control systems; the prevention of competition manipulation; cooperation with law enforcement; safe sport; and respecting human rights. It also contains useful links to related resources.
Second, in June, the IOC published its 2022 Annual Report, with the overarching theme of “Solidarity and Peace” and a structure inspired by the five key trends that underpin Olympic Agenda 2020+5 – one of which is credibility. The dedicated section explains the measures undertaken in governance and ethics, including details of the IOC Risk and Assurance Governance Model; measures in the fight for clean sport, in particular when it comes to the fight against doping, competition manipulation and all forms of corruption in sport; and policies and changes in regard to IOC Members, including the IOC Members’ Indemnity Policy. In 2022, the IOC continued to strengthen its commitment to good governance and transparency, notably by updating the IOC Code of Ethics to incorporate the new BUPGG.
In addition to outlining the activities carried out during the past year, the Report includes the audited financial statements for 2022. The financial statements are prepared and audited in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), even though the IOC is not legally obliged to comply with these higher standards.
