IOC President meets Emir of Qatar in New York
President Bach met with the Emir of Qatar, Sheik Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, during the United Nations General Assembly, Wednesday.
President Bach thanked the Emir, who is an IOC member, for the NOC of Qatar being a founding partner of the Olympic Refuge Foundation. The two leaders spoke about projects which the Foundation will realize in cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The Olympic Refuge Foundation was launched last week during the IOC Session in Lima, Peru. Its aim is to create safe, basic and accessible sports facilities in areas where there are refugees, a displaced migrant population and internally displaced people.
During the discussions the two leaders also discussed issues of mutual interest. President Bach expressed the hope that the tensions in the region will not affect participation in sports competitions.
