Former United Nations Secretary-General, Javier Pérez de Cuéllar – a great servant of the Olympic Movement
The International Olympic Committee has joined the chorus of praise for the former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, who has died. Mr Pérez de Cuéllar, who was UN Secretary-General from 1982 to 1991, was one of the founding members of the IOC’s first Ethics Commission in 1999.
Praising him for his contribution, IOC President Thomas Bach said: “the Olympic Movement owes him great debt of gratitude. He was one of the fathers of the IOC Ethics Commission, which is now appropriately chaired by one of his successors, former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. He made a great contribution to the strong reputation and governance of the IOC.”
Mr Pérez de Cuéllar, who served two terms as UN Secretary-General, died yesterday at the age of 100.
