St Moritz has built on its proud tradition of hosting prestigious events since welcoming the Olympic Winter Games for a second time. Major sporting events hosted in the Swiss resort include regular International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF), International Luge Federation (FIL) and International Ski Federation (FIS) World Cups and World Championships, while the bobsleigh, luge and skeleton and speed skating events at the Winter Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 were also held in the resort.
St Moritz is the home of the Snow Polo World Cup, the only “high-goal” polo tournament to be played on snow, on Sankt Moritzsee, the lake on the resort’s southern edge. Founded in 1985, the three-day event is contested by sponsored teams featuring some of polo’s most famous players, and attracts around 12,000 spectators.
Another prestigious social/sporting occasion is the start of the Bernina Gran Turismo, a hill climb that follows the Bernina Pass from St Moritz to the village of Poschiavo every September. Featuring classic racing and sports cars from the 1930s to the early 1980s, this romantic event keeps the memory of the legendary Bernina Race of 1929 and 1930 alive.
Another major event on the hectic St Moritz sporting calendar is the White Turf international horse racing meet – which has been running since 1907 and is also held on Sankt Moritzsee – and the St Moritz Sommer Polo Cup. Away from sport, the resort also provides the setting for the St Moritz Gourmet Festival and the Festival da Jazz, just two of its major cultural events.
