Loh Kean Yew is arguably the biggest name in action in the badminton competition at the Southeast Asian Games 2023 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Fresh off the back of winning a continental silver medal at the Badminton Asia Championships in Dubai, Loh will lead Team Singapore in the men's team event, which runs from 8–11 May.

The remainder of the SEA Games badminton competition in Phnom Penh clashes with the BWF Sudirman Cup – the world mixed team championships – which starts in Suzhou, People's Republic of China, on 14 May. Therefore, many other big names are skipping the SEA Games tournament to focus on the Sudirman Cup.

As a result, the individual events at the SEA Games will feature many up-and-coming players for the bigger nations such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, who will be focusing on the Sudirman Cup.
