Live streaming, Asian Games 2023 badminton trials: Preview, format

The trials for the selection of the Indian badminton squad for the Asian Games 2023 will take place from May 4 to 7 at the Jwala Gutta Academy of Excellence in Hyderabad, Telangana. The badminton selection trials will be live streamed.

A total of 20 players – 10 men and 10 women – will represent India at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, which will be held from September 23 to October 8 this year. 

The selection trials, however, are being held for 14 spots. Indian badminton players PV Sindhu, HS Pranoy, men’s doubles pair Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and women’s duo Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly received direct entries courtesy of being in the top 20 in the BWF rankings.

Meanwhile, London 2012 medallist Saina Nehwal pulled out of the selection trials due to fitness issues. 

The trials will field nine men’s singles players and eight women’s singles players. The men’s and mixed doubles have four entries each for the trials while the women’s doubles category has three entries.

Three players each from the men’s and women’s singles and one pair each for men’s and women’s doubles and two mixed doubles combinations will be selected to complete the Asian Games squad.

Asian Games 2023 badminton selection trials format 

The men’s and women’s singles players will be divided in two groups in Stage 1 with the top-two players in each group progressing to Stage 2. The four players will once again face off in a league format and the result of Stage 2 will be considered for the final standings.

For the doubles events, there will be only one stage with all pairs playing in a round-robin format to decide the final standings.

The Asian Games 2023 will have separate team championships for men and women followed by individual events in which India can have a maximum of two entries per event.

Live streaming of the badminton selection trials for the Asian Games 2023 will be available on BAI's YouTube channel. There will be no live telecast of the event on any TV channel in India.
