Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu, along with Commonwealth Games champions Jeremy Lalrinnunga and Achinta Sheuli, will compete at the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2023 in Jinju, South Korea, starting Friday.

Live streaming of the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2023 will be available in India.

A total of six Indian weightlifters will compete at the continental championships, which is second in the series of qualifying events for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The qualifiers started with the World Weightlifting Championships 2022 in Colombia where Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal in the women’s 49kg division.

The weightlifters competing in these qualifying events will be able to improve their Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR) based on their total results (snatch + clean and jerk).

The list of 10 qualified athletes in each of the Olympic weight categories (maximum one per country) will be published by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) at the end of the qualification period for the Paris Olympics on April 28, 2024.

At the Asian championships, Mirabai Chanu will compete in the women’s 49kg. It will also be her first time in action since completing a five-month rehabilitation programme at NIS Patiala.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga (men’s 67kg) and Achinta Sheuli (men’s 73kg) will also be returning from injuries.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga pulled his lower back and thigh during his gold medal-winning performance at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham in August.

Achinta Sheuli had suffered from a hamstring pull before the start of his competition at the world weightlifting championships in December.

Bindyarani Devi, who won silver in women’s 55kg at the Commonwealth Games 2022, Shubham Todkar (men’s 61kg) and Narayana Ajith (men’s 73kg) complete the Indian contingent line-up.

The previous Asian Weightlifting Championships were held last year in Manama, Bahrain. There, Harshada Garud, competing in women’s 45kg, won a bronze. It was India’s only medal in the competition.
