India finished the second official day of the Asian Games 2023 with two gold and six bronze medals, with another medal in wushu assured.

Shooters Rudrankksh Patil, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Divyansh Singh Panwar won India’s first gold medal at the Asian Games 2023 and shattered the world record in the men’s 10m air rifle team final. The women’s cricket team soon followed, winning a first-ever gold medal at the continental meet.

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, meanwhile, also settled for bronze in the men’s 10m air rifle individual event. Vijayveer Sidhu, Adarsh Singh and Anish Bhanwala, too, bagged bronze in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol team event.

Rowing added two more bronze medals - men’s four and men’s quadruple - to finish their stint at Hangzhou with five medals.

In Wushu, Roshibina Devi Naorem assured at least a bronze medal after winning her women's 60kg quarter-final bout.

Swimmers Srihari Nataraj and Likith Selvaraj along with the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team made their respective finals but failed to finish on the podium. 

Boxers Nishant Dev (men’s 71kg) and Deepak Bhoria (men’s 51kg) won their pre-quarterfinal bouts while Arundhati Choudhary (women’s 66kg) was knocked out.

The biggest upset of the day was top seeds Rohan Bopanna and Yuki Bhambri crashing out of the men’s doubles in the second round. Six other tennis matches, including Ankita Raina’s women’s singles event, saw Indian players advance to the next round.

Boxing: Nishant Dev makes men's 71kg pre-quarters

Indian boxer Nishant Dev, a world championship bronze medallist, secured a perfect score to win 5-0 against Nepal's Dipesh Lama in the men's 71kg round of 32 bout.

He will take on Vietnamese boxer Bui Phuoc Tung on Thursday, September 28 in the round of 16 at 6:45 PM IST.

Swimming: Likith Selvaraj, men's 4x200m relay team falter in finals 

After finishing eighth in the heats earlier in the day, Indian swimmer Likith Selvaraj clocked 1:01.62 in the men's 100m backstroke final to rank seventh at Hangzhou 2023. 

Selvaraj had the joint-quickest reaction time of 0.63 seconds, however, he fell down the pack to finish 2.34 seconds behind the podium places. China's Qin Haiyang broke the Asian Games record, clocking 57.76 seconds, to claim the gold medal. Compatriot Yan Zibei bagged silver while Republic of Korea's Dongyeol Choi settled for bronze. 

Meanwhile, the Indian men's 4x200m relay team, too, finished seventh in the final with a time of 7:29.23. Aryan Nehra and Aneesh Gowda completed their legs in eighth place. However, Kushagra Rawat helped India advance to seventh place in the third leg, which Tanish George Matthew maintained towards the end.

The Republic of Korea team clinched the gold medal with an Asian record time of 7:01.73. China and Japan settled for silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Men's Kite - IKA Formula Kite: Chitresh Tatha finished seventh overall after 16 races.

Men's Dinghy - ILCA7: Vishnu Saravanan dropped from second to third position after discarding his score race 8.

Women's Single Dinghy - ILCA6: Nethra Kumaran stays fifth overall after adding 11 points to her net tally today.

Men's Skiff - 49er: KC Ganapathy-Varun Thakkar are fourth after with 41 net points. They were ranked second after Sunday's races.

Women's Skiff - 49erFX: Harshita Tomar-Shital Verma added 11 points to their net tally today and are still ranked fourth.

Mixed Multihull - Nacra 17: Siddeshwar Indar Doiphode-Ramya Saravanan added seven points to their net tally, same as Sunday, to stay fourth.

Mixed Dinghy - 470: Sudhanshu Shekhar-Preeti Kongara are fifth with 39 net points.

Men's Windsurfer RS:X: Eabad Ali did not finish race 12 and returned with three points in race 13 and rose to third position.

Women's Windsurfer RS:X: Ishwariya Ganesh stays fourth with 41 net points, five more than the third-placed sailer.

Boy's Dinghy - ILCA4: Adhvait Menon took a step forward to seventh position after today's two races.

Girl's Dinghy - ILCA4: Neha Thakur rose to second with 23 net points after 11 races.

Boxing: Deepak Bhoria wins men's 51kg round of 32 bout

World boxing championships bronze medallist Deepak Bhoria beat Malaysia's Muhammad Abdul Qaiyum 5-0 in the men's 51kg round of 32 bout at the Asian Games 2023. It is an Olympic category event with a Paris 2024 Olympics berth on offer.

Deepak will take the ring against Japan's Tomoya Tsuboi in the round of 16 on September 28.

Indian boxer Arundhati Choudhary, meanwhile, lost 5-0 on points against reigning world champion boxer Yang Liu in the women's 66kg round of 16. A world youth champion, Arundhati failed to secure an Olympic berth for India.

Nishant Dev (men's 71kg) will also be in action today at 7:00 PM IST.

Swimming: Srihari Nataraj sixth in men's 50m backstroke final

Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj, who took sixth spot in the heats, also finished sixth in the men's 50m backstroke final at the Asian Games 2023. He clocked 25.39 seconds, which was 0.24 seconds behind bronze medallist Ryosuke Irie. China's Xu Jiayu and Wang Gukailai bagged the gold and silver medals, respectively.

The 22-year-old Srihari Nataraj was sixth in the men's 100m backstroke final, too, on Sunday.

Wushu: Roshibina Devi Naorem assured bronze medal

India's Roshibina Devi Naorem won by point difference against Aiman Karshyga in the wushu women's 60kg quarter-finals at the Asian Games 2023. The victory assured her of at least a bronze medal at Hangzhou.

Surya Bhanu Partap Singh won his men’s 60kg pre-quarterfinal bout 2-1 against Uzbekistan's Islomek Khaydarov. Vikrant Baliyan, however, lost his men’s 65kg pre-quarterfinal by the same scoreline against Samuel Marbun of Indonesia.

Chess: Koneru Humpy beaten in women's individual round 4

Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy suffered her first defeat of the Asian Games 2023 as Chinese Grandmaster Hou Yifan won the round 4 women's individual game. Harika Dronavalli, who lost in round 3, split the points with Nilufar Yakubbaeva in the fourth round.

Meanwhile, India's Arjun Kumar Erigaisi made it back-to-back wins in the men's individual event. Vidit Santosh Gujarathi, however, was held to a draw.

The four Indian Grandmasters will feature in rounds 5 and 6 tomorrow, starting at 12:30 PM IST.

Tennis: Rohan Bopanna-Rutuja Bhosale win round 2 match

Indian mixed doubles pair Rohan Bopanna and Rutuja Bhosale, seeded second, won 6-2, 6-4 against Maksim Shin and Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan in the round 2 match at the Asian Games 2023. They had received a bye in the first round.

Rohan Bopanna had lost his men's doubles match earlier in the day at Hangzhou. However, he and Rutuja Bhosale got the better of the Uzbekistan pair in 64 minutes while winning 68 points and serving four aces.

Cricket: Indian women's team bag maiden Asian Games gold medal

The Indian women's cricket team won the gold medal in their first-ever Asian Games campaign. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, India beat Sri Lanka in the final by 19 runs.

While Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues helped India with the bat to a competitive total of 116, Titas Sadhu was India's star with the ball. The 18-year-old seamer scalped three wickets at an economy rate of just 1.50, restricting Sri Lanka to 97/8.

The Indian men's cricket team will also take the field at the Asian Games 2023, starting October 3 in the first quarter-final.

Chess: Koneru Humpy shares points in round 3

Two-time Asian Games gold medallist Koneru Humpy was held to a draw by Chinese player Zhu Jiner in women's individual chess round 3 at Hangzhou 2023. India's 36-year-old grandmaster had won both her games on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Harika Dronavalli lost her first game of the Asian Games 2023 against China's Hou Yifan. In men's individual chess, both Grandmasters Arjun Kumar Erigaisi and Vidit Santosh Gujarathi won their third round games.

Rugby sevens: India lose placing 7 match to Kazakhstan

The Indian women's rugby sevens team went down 24-7 against Kazakhstan in their Placing 7 match at the Asian Games 2023. Although they remained winless in this edition, India scored their first points in a match at Hangzhou. 

India had finished fourth in the women's rugby sevens Pool F after three defeats in three matches.

Tennis: Rutuja Bhosale-Karman Thandi make women's doubles round 2

Indian women's doubles pair Rutuja Bhosale and Karman Thandi won 6-4, 6-2 against Kazakhstan pair Zhanel Rustemova and Aruzhan Sagandykova in the first round at the Asian Games 2023.

The Indian pair served five aces and converted all five break points in their 93-minute clash. They will feature in the women's doubles round 2 tomorrow.

Handball: India go down to Japan in women's Group B opener

The Indian women's handball team suffered a 41-13 loss against Japan in their opening Group B match at the Asian Games 2023. Menika scored four while Priyanka Thakur smashed three goals for India. Japanese player Sora Ishikawa was the top-scorer with seven goals.

India finished eighth in 2006, 2010 and 2014, and were ranked ninth in 2018 in their previous women's handball campaigns at the Asian Games.

Cricket: India score 116/7 in the women's final

Electing to bat first, the Indian women's cricket team notched 116/7 after 20 overs on the scoreboard against Sri Lanka in the Asian Games 2023 gold medal match.

Smriti Mandhana slammed 46 runs off 45 balls while Jemimah Rodrigues registered a 40-ball 42. Udeshika Prabodhani, Sugandika Kumari and Inoka Ranaweera took two wickets each for Sri Lanka.

Basketball: Men's 3x3 team beat Malaysia

The Indian men's 3x3 basketball team won 20-16 against Malaysia to kick off their Asian Games 2023 campaign. Sahaji Pratap Singh Sekhon top-scored for India with 10 points in the opener.

They will face Macao China in their second men's round robin Pool C match on September 27 before going up against China on September 29. The pool winners will directly make the quarter-finals while second and third placed teams will play cross-pool matches for a quarter-final spot.

Tennis: Bopanna-Bhambri knocked out in men's doubles

Top-seeded pair Rohan Bopanna and Yuki Bhambri lost against Uzbekistan's Sergey Fomin and Khumoyun in the men's doubles round 2 tennis match at the Asian Games 2023. After winning the first set 6-2, the Indian pair went down 6-3 in the second set before a 10-6 defeat in the third.

Bopanna, meanwhile, will feature in the mixed doubles match, alongside Rutuja Bhosale, later today.

Saketh Myneni and Ramkumar Ramanathan, seeded second in men's doubles, won 6-3, 6-2 against Anthony Susanto and Agung Susanto of Indonesia to advance to the next round.

Shooting: Vijayveer Sidhu misses out on individual medal

Indian shooter Vijayveer Sidhu finished fourth in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol final at the Asian Games 2023. He notched up 21 points by the end of series 6, but it wasn't enough to advance to the final two series.

China's Li Yuehong and Liu Yangpan won the gold and silver medals, respectively, while Kazakhstan shooter Nikita Chiryukin settled for bronze. 

Vijayveer Sidhu was a part of India's men's 25m rapid fire pistol team at Hanazhou, which won the bronze medal earlier in the day.

Basketball: Women's 3x3 team defeated in opener

The Indian women's 3x3 basketball team lost 19-14 against Uzbekistan in their opening Asian Games 2023 group stage match. India's Vaishnavi Yadav scored nine points, the most in the match.

India will take on China in their final Pool A match on September 27. Depending on the results, the women's 3x3 team will feature in the quarter-final or the qualification to the quarter-final round on September 30.

Cricket: India win toss, elect to bat in women's cricket final

The Indian women's cricket team will bat first against Sri Lanka in the women's cricket final at the Asian Games 2023. Harmanpreet Kaur returns to lead India in the gold medal match. It will be broadcast on the Sony Sports Network in India.

India have won 18 of the 23 T20 Internationals played against Sri Lanka.

Judo: Garima Choudhary ousted in round of 16

Indian judoka Garima Choudhary suffered a defeat by ippon in the women's -70kg round of 16 match against the Philippines' Ryoko Salinas. The defeat ended her campaign at the Asian Games 2023.

Avtar Singh (men's -100kg), Indubala Devi Maibam (women's -78kg) and Commonwealth Games 2022 silver medallist Tulika Maan (women's +78kg) will continue India's quest in judo tomorrow, starting at 7:30 AM IST.

Tennis: Rutuja Bhosale through to women's singles round 3

Indian tennis player Rutuja Bhosale won 7-6, 6-2 in the women's singles round 2 to make it to the third round at the Asian Games 2023. The match clocked 121 minutes as the 27-year-old Rutuja overcame an intense first set against Kazakhstan's Aruzhan Sagandykova.

Earlier in the day, Ankita Raina and Ramkumar Ramanathan also advanced to round 3 at Hangzhou.

Shooting: Men's 25m rapid fire pistol team settle for bronze

Indian shooters Adarsh Singh, Anish and Vijayveer Sidhu scored 1718 points in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol team final to bag the bronze medal at the Asian Games 2023. It took India's medal tally to 10 at Hangzhou.

China won the gold medal with 1765 points while the Republic of Korea claimed the silver medal with 1734 points.

Vijayveer Sidhu, meanwhile, qualified for the men's 25m rapid fire pistol individual final after finishing sixth. The 21-year-old Indian shooter will be in action again at 11:30 AM IST today.

Artistic Gymnastics: Pranati Nayak leads vault after subdivision 1

Indian gymnast Pranati Nayak currently leads the vault apparatus with a score of 12.716 after women's subdivision 1 concluded at the Asian Games 2023. She also ranked fifth in uneven bars, seventh in balance beam and ninth on floor apparatus. 

Currently seventh in the all-round rankings, Tokyo 2020 Olympian Pranati Nayak's final position will be determined after subdivision 2 and subdivision 3 results today.

Shooting: Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar bags bronze

Indian shooter Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar edged over compatriot Rudrankksh Patil to win the men's 10m air rifle bronze medal at the Asian Games 2023.

Aishwary scored 228.8 points on his way to finishing third. Rudrankksh, meanwhile, finished fourth with 208.7 points after the shoot-off. 

China's Sheng Lihao broke the Asian, Asian Games and World records with a score of 253.3 while clinching the gold medal at the men's 10m air rifle final at Hangzhou 2023. Republic of Korea's Hajun Park claimed the silver medal.

Swimming: Likith Selvaraj, men's 4x200m freestyle relay team make the final

Indian swimmer Likith Selvaraj clocked 1:01.98 to finish eighth overall in the men's 100m breaststroke heats and advanced to the final. He finished 3.63 seconds behind China's Qin Haiyang, who set the Asian Games record in this category with 58.35 seconds.  

Selvaraj will swim in the men's 100m breaststroke final at 5:43 PM IST today.

The Indian men's 4x200m freestyle relay team, too, made the final after ranking fourth in heat 2, sixth overall. Kushagra Rawat and Co. broke the national record with a time of 7:29.04. They will swim in the final today at 6:24 PM IST.

Rugby sevens: Indian women's team defeated in final group match

The Indian women's rugby sevens team lost 15-0 against Singapore in their final Pool F match. They will now take on Kazakhstan in the placing 7 match at 1:30 PM today.

Hong Kong China and Japan emerged victorious against India yesterday. The Indian team failed to score a single point at Hangzhou while they conceded 98 across three matches.

Rowing: Indian men's quadruple sculls team claims bronze

India bagged its second rowing bronze medal of the day as the men's quadruple sculls team clocked 6:08.61 to finish third at the Asian Games 2023. Rowers Satnam Singh, Parminder Singh, Jakar Khan and Sukhmeet Singh finished 5.96 seconds behind gold medallists China.

The Indian team were fourth after the first 500m, however, they took the third spot by the 1000m mark.

On the other hand, India's women's eight team finished fifth in the final A event, clocking 7:05.71. They were 32.10 seconds off the lead and failed to challenge the podium spots.

Tennis: India's Ankita Raina through to round 3

Indian tennis player Ankita Raina, seeded third at the Asian Games 2023, beat Kazakhstan's Sabrina Olimjonova 6-0, 6-0 in the women's singles round 2. The Jakarta 2018 bronze medallist will now feature in the third round tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Ramkumar Ramanathan received a walkover in his round 2 men's singles match against Sunatullo Isroilov of Tajikistan.

Swimming: Srihari Nataraj advances to men's 50m backstroke final

Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj finished sixth overall in the men's 50m backstroke heats to secure a spot in the final at the Asian Games 2023. The 22-year-old had ranked sixth in the men's 100m backstroke final on Sunday.

Srihari Nataraj will feature in the final today at 5:00 PM IST.

Meanwhile, Maana Patel failed to make the women's 50m backstroke final after finishing 18th overall in the heats. India's Vidharwal Khade and Anand AS, too, did not qualify for the men's 50m freestyle final. Dhinidhi Desinghu also clocked 12th overall in the women's 200m freestyle event and will not race in the final.

Rowing: Indian men's four settle for bronze

Indian rowers Jaswinder Singh, Bheem Singh, Punit Kumar and Ashish claimed the bronze medal in the men's four final A at the Asian Games 2023. They finished with a time of 6:10.81, clocking 5.85 seconds behind the gold-winning Uzbekistan team.

While the Indian team was fourth after 1000m, they raced past the Japanese team to take the final podium spot, finishing only 0.77 seconds behind silver medallists China.

Shooting: Men's 10m air rifle team bags India's first Asian Games 2023 gold

Shooters Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Rudrankksh Patil and Divyansh Singh Panwar scored a world record 1893.7 in the men's 10m air rifle event to win India's first gold medal at the Asian Games 2023.

India were in a race with the Republic of Korea and China, who settled for silver and bronze, respectively, for the top spot at the podium.

The gold medal is India's sixth medal of Hangzhou 2023, following the five on Sunday.

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Rudrankksh Patil made the individual final after qualifying third and fifth, respectively. However, Divyansh Singh Panwar did not advance to the final, despite finishing eighth, due to the Asian Games' rule of only two shooters allowed from a nation to feature in the final. The men's 10m air rifle individual final will begin today at 9:00 AM IST.

Rowing: Balraj Panwar finishes fourth in men's single sculls

Indian rower Balraj Panwar settled for fourth position in the men's single sculls final A at the Asian Games 2023.

Panwar, who was fourth at the 500m mark, had surged into a bronze medal position by the 1500m mark. However, Hong Kong China's Chiu Hin Chun pipped him before the finish line. The Indian rower finished 11.73 seconds behind gold medallist Zhang Liang from China. Japan's Ryuta Arakawa bagged the silver medal.

India will compete in three more rowing finals today.

Tennis: Ankita Raina, Rohan Bopanna set to feature

Rohan Bopanna, who bagged the men's doubles gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games, will take the court today alongside Yuki Bhambri. The 43-year-old Indian tennis player will also partner with Rutuja Bhosale in mixed doubles at Hangzhou 2023.

Meanwhile, India's highest-ranked women's tennis player Ankita Raina in women's singles today against Kazakhstan's Sabrina Olimjonova. Raina had settled for a bronze medal at the 2018 Asian Games.

Tennis action begins today at 7:30 AM IST.

Shooting, rowing kick off the day

Shooters Rudrankksh Patil, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Divyansh Singh Panwar will contest in the men’s 10m air rifle qualification, individual final and team final, starting at 6:30 AM IST.

Anish, Vijayveer Sidhu and Adarsh Singh will also contest in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol qualification phase 2 and individual final shooting events.

Rowing begins at 7:00 AM IST today with the men’s single sculls final A, followed by the men’s coxless four final A, men’s quadruple sculls final A and women’s coxed eight.

Swimming, tennis and gymnastics events, meanwhile, will kick off at 7:30 AM IST.
