With seven golds, nine silvers and six bronze medals, India returned from the Asian Games 2023 shooting events in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China with an unprecedented haul of 22 medals.

Shooting at the Asian Games 2023 was held for eight days from September 24 to October 1.

Palak Gulia and Sift Kaur Samra won individual gold medals in the 10m air pistol and 50m rifle 3 positions, respectively. Sift Kaur Samra’s gold medal-winning score of 469.6 in the final was also a new world record.

The other five gold medals for India’s 33-member shooting contingent came from the team events.

Former world champion Rudrankksh Patil along with Olympians Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Divyansh Singh Panwar got the gold in the 10m air rifle with a world record of 1893.7.

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar was also part of the gold medal-winning men’s team in the 50m rifle 3P. That gold also came with a world record of 1769. The Tokyo Olympian clinched silver and bronze in the individual 50m rifle 3P and 10m air rifle, respectively, and was India’s most successful shooter at the Asian Games with four medals.

Another shooter to win four medals was teenager Esha Singh. She combined with Manu Bhaker and Rhythm Sangwan for gold in the 25m pistol and silver with Palak Gulia and Divya TS in the 10m air pistol. She claimed individual silver medals in both shooting events.

Inda also broke several Asian Games shooting records at the meet. Kynan Chenai, Zoravar Singh Sandhu and Prithviraj Toindaman won the gold medal for India in the men’s trap team event with an Asian Games record of 361.

Sarabjot Singh, Arjun Singh Cheema and Shiva Narwal combined to win the gold medal in the men’s 10m air pistol team. Sarabjot Singh and Divya TS claimed silver in the 10m air pistol mixed team.

Medals were on offer in 33 events across individual and team categories in rifle, pistol and shotgun. However, India did not participate in any of the running target shooting events.

Shooting has been a part of the Asian Games programme since 1954. The 22 medals won by India have taken their all-time tally to 80 shooting medals, including 16 gold.

India’s best performance in shooting before the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023 was three golds out of 14 medals at Doha 2006. At Jakarta 2018, India finished with nine medals, including two golds.
