A 68-member Indian athletics squad, including the likes of Neeraj Chopra, Jyothi Yarraji and Avinash Sable, competed for medals across 37 different events at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China.

Athletics at the Asian Games 2023 got underway on September 29 and concluded on October 5 with the marathon events. The track and field competitions at the 19th edition of the Asian Games were held at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium.

Athletics turned out to be the most lucrative sport for India at the Asian Games 2023, accounting for a total of 29 medals - six gold, 14 silver and nine bronze. Neeraj Chopra (men's javelin throw), Annu Rani (women's javelin throw), Tajinderpal Singh Toor (men's shot put), Avinash Sable (men's 3000m steeplechase), Parul Chaudhary (women's 5000m) and the quarted of Muhammad Anas, Amoj Jacob, Muhammad Ajmal and Rajesh Ramesh (men's 4x400m relay) accounted for the six top podium finish.

Tejaswin Shankar (men's decathlon) and the mixed 4x400m relay team of Muhammad Ajmal, Vithya Ramraj, Rajesh Ramesh, Subha Venkatesan also reset the national records in their respective events while Vithya Ramraj managed to equal the legendary PT Usha's national mark in the women's 400m hurdles after almost four decades.

Kishore Jena, who finished with a silver medal in men's javelin throw, also managed to breach the Paris 2024 qualifying standards at Hangzhou.

Jyothi Yarraji finished with a silver medal in women's 100m hurdles while Harmilan Bains, Parul Chaudhary and Avinash Sable won two individual medals each. Vithya Ramraj, meanwhile, was part of three different medal distribution ceremonies (silver in women's 400m hurdless, silver in mixed 4x400m relay and silver in women's 4x400m relay).

Among the 37 athletics events with Indian representation at Hangzhou, 16 were men’s events, 19 were for women and the remaining two were mixed team events.
