Aleksander Aamodt Kilde upset rival alpine skier Marco Odermatt in front of a big Swiss crowd in Wengen to claim his second World Cup Super G win of the season on Friday (13 January).

The 30-year-old Norwegian, who last month was victorious in Beaver Creek, USA, started down the order with bib number 15, but powered down the Lauberhorn course to beat the leading time set by Stefan Rogentin by 0.27 seconds.

"I tried just to keep my momentum up, from the start I just pushed as hard as I could. I had to race on the limit, this is how you have to do in Super G, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't," Kilde said to Eurosport Discovery after equalling Luxembourg legend Marc Girardelli in fifth place on the list of the all-time winners in the discipline.

World Cup leader Odermatt finished 0.66 seconds behind the winner to complete the podium in third position, but comfortably retains the lead in the overall rankings with 1106 points with Kilde on 746.

In the Super G standings the Norwegian is now just 28 points behind the Swiss:

"It'll be a tight race until the end. I know Odermatt is never giving up, the same with me," Kilde added. "We'll see until the last race who's the best Super G skier in the world right now."

Swiss athletes were dominant on home snow with five skiers finishing in the top 10 on a day when 2019/2020 Super G globe winner Mauro Caviezel announced his retirement from competitions.

Action on the Lauberhorn will continue during the weekend with a downhill and slalom on Saturday and Sunday.
