London offers multiple track and field stars the perfect tune-up before they head off to next month’s World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

With most of the teams having selected their squads for the worlds, the athletes are now firmly focussed on tuning up their performances.

The London Diamond League meeting on Sunday 23 July, which returns to the London Stadium for the first time in four years, has stacked track and field entries.

In the sprints, the women’s 100m line-up has two of the fastest women this season, Shericka Jackson and Sha’Carri Richardson, plus home favourite Dina Asher-Smith, while Noah Lyles headlines the men’s 200m.

Dutch star Femke Bol is the top pick in the women’s 400m hurdles, while South African men's 400m world record holder Wayde Van Nierkerk’s steady comeback is tipped to continue in the one-lap race.

The field events have attracted the crème-de-la-crème, from the finest over the shot put, Ryan Crouser, to Qatar’s world and Olympic men’s high jump gold medallist Mutaz Essa Barshim, and another Olympic and world champ in pole vaulter Katie Nageotte-Moon.

Here’s what you need to know.

Athletes and must-watch events at the 2023 London Diamond League

Women’s 100m - World Championships preview?

July has been an incredible month for the women’s dash. It started with some scintillating runs at the National Trials in the U.S. and Jamaica, where Richardson and Jackson posted personal bests of 10.71 and 10.65 respectively.

And they head to London after Silesia, where Richardson just edged Jackson. The 2019 world gold medallist Dina Asher-Smith and Cote d'Ivoire's Marie Jose Ta Lou will also use the race to fine-tune for Budapest.

Star-studded men's 200m line-up

The men’s 200m is bound to be the other main race of the day.

The reigning world champion over the distance, Lyles, will be joined by Britain's national sprint double champion Zharnel Hughes, seeking to thrill the crowds with another fast finish after conquering a rainy track in Manchester. Another man to watch is Alexander Ogando, the mixed relay world champ, who upset Erriyon Knighton at the Istvan Gyulai Memorial in Székesfehérvár, Hungary on Tuesday.

Eyes on Sifan Hassan in the 5k

The women’s 5000m will see the return of Sifan Hassan to the English capital, where she launched her marathon career with a brilliant win at the 2023 London race.

The Dutchwoman has expressed her desire to remain on track at the worlds and at Paris 2024, even as she seeks to transition to the 42.2km road distance. This will be her first 5000m race this season after a successful double in the 1500m and 10,000m at the FBK Games in Hengelo.

But local fans will be cheering for Eilish McColgan, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion who will lead team GB’s long-distance team in Budapest.

Loaded field events in London

The field events are also stacked with leading names.

American double Olympic champ Crouser remains the man to beat in the shot put and so is fellow world champion Kristjan Čeh of Slovenia, who will come up against reigning Olympic gold medallist from Sweden, Daniel Ståhl.

Team USA’s duo of Moon and world silver medallist Sandi Morris, alongside British star Holly Bradshaw, the Olympic bronze medallist, are set to wow the crowds in the women’s pole vault.

Qatar’s icon Barshim will be looking to push the bar further in the men's discipline after setting a new meeting record of 2.36m at the Diamond League meeting in Silesia.
