The two fastest women of 2023 met in the 100m at the Silesia Diamond League in Poland on Sunday (16 July), and it was Sha'Carri Richardson who came out on top.
Fresh from clocking a personal best of 10.65 at the Jamaican trials, Shericka Jackson looked like she would prevail as she took over from fast-starting home favourite Ewa Swoboda at halfway,
But Richardson stuck to her game plan and held her form to finish strong, going in front just metres from the line to triumph in 10.76.
Jackson was second in 10.78 as 60m specialist Swoboda delighted the home fans by breaking 11 seconds for the first time with 10.94.
Twanisha Terry was fourth in a season's best 10.99 ahead of Britain's Daryll Neita with Germany's European champion Gina Lückenkemper back in seventh place.
Richardson, who remains unbeaten in 2023, said afterwards, "It was an amazing race, I am really having fun. The 10.76 - I love the time. I put a great race together. This was a great competition, it was amazing. I executed correctly.
"I love the atmosphere here. I wish we could replicate this in the U.S.. All the energy, all the love from the audience. I was satisfied with my race altogether."
With Jackson completing the sprint double - including beating Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce over 200m - at the Jamaican trials, and Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah out of form, Richardson has marked herself out as a genuine world title contender in Budapest next month.
