Leonie Beck has established herself as one of the top open water swimmers in the world.

Having impressed in junior competitions, Beck was just 14 when she won the German national 1500m freestyle title in 2012. She also claimed the European junior title in that event before winning gold over 400m and 800m the following year.

Beck retained her German national 1500 free title the following year, and competed in that event at the Barcelona 2013 World Championships but failed to make it out of the heats. Then at the 2015 Worlds in Kazan, Russia, she was an agonising one spot away from making the finals of both the 800 and 1500 free.

Beck made her Olympic debut at Rio 2016, finishing down in 25th in the 800 free with the 1500 free not appearing until Tokyo 2020.

Leonie Beck: Switch to open water pays dividends

Beck came into her own once she switched to longer distances in open water after the Rio Games. In 2018, she won European Championship silver over 5km and finished runner-up in two Open Water World Cup events.
