World street skateboarding champion Aurelien Giraud laid down an early marker of intent by qualifying top of the pack in the men's quarter-finals at the WST Street Skateboarding Rome 2023 event on Friday (23 June).

The 25-year-old Frenchman, seeded first for the contest, sent waves through the competition field after he put down an eye-watering 90.03 opening run to claim first place heading into Saturday's semi-finals, to be streamed on the Olympic Channel via Olympics.com live.

Giraud's impressive showing followed a string of high-scoring runs from skaters in the final heat including Gustavo Ribeiro (88.43), Nyjah Huston (86.25), and 13-year-old Japanese young gun Onodera Ginwoo (84.00), who all also looked to make their presence known.

As a consequence, several big names failed to make the cut and will miss the semis, including Olympic champion Horigome Yuto who was the biggest casualty of the night.

The 24-year-old, who had been looking to get his Paris 2024 Olympic qualification campaign on track after falling during the men's open qualifier at the World Street Skateboarding Championships earlier this year, was just 0.74 points shy of making the next round.

The other Tokyo 2020 medallists, Jagger Eaton and Kelvin Hoefler, did both make it through from the quarter-finals.

Hoefler was one of four Brazilians to book a last 16 place, with 31-year-old Carlos Ribeiro leading the charge in fourth place.

Earlier in the day, Rayssa Leal finished the women's quarter-finals in the top spot.

The competition, which is also serving as a qualification event for Paris 2024 with ranking points awarded based on the final results, will continue on Saturday with the semi-finals.

The action will begin with the women's semi-final at 15:55 local time (UTC+2), live on Olympic Channel.
