Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Horigome Yuto failed to make it through to the quarter-finals of the skateboarding street world championships 2022 in 2023 after coming up short in the men's open qualifier on Thursday night (2 February).

The 24-year-old put pressure on his second run after he fell in his first, but despite stringing together a clean peformance it wasn't enough to see him progress at the event also doubling-up as a Paris 2024 Olympic qualifier.

Horigome's suprise early departure wasn't the only shock at the Aljada skate park.

Australian street skateboarding legend Shane O'Neill fell on both run attempts meaning he was unable to compete with the hunting field. Canada's Micky Papa and Puerto Rican Manny Santiago were other notable names that also didn't advance.

While it was a night of disappointment for some there were statements of intent laid down by others.

Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Jagger Eaton, who is beginning his road to Paris 2024 in Sharjah having missed last year's first Olympic qualifier in Rome due to injury, finished on top of the 28 skateboarders progressing through to tomorrow's quarter-finals.

The 21-year-old proved to be a cut above the rest putting down a 83.15 run to finish eight points clear at the top.

Though Japan may have lost their biggest star their freshest prospect 12-year-old Onodera Ginwoo proved to be the day's great revelation. Onodera, who won the national championships November, qualified in second place to lead the five skaters from Japan heading to the next round.

Brazil also saw five of their skaters through to the quarter-finals with Olympic silver medallist Kelvin Hoefler finishing on the cusp in 28th.
