WST Street Skateboarding Rome 2023: Rayssa Leal, Chloe Covell, Nishiya Momiji through to semis - Women's quarter-final results
Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Leal flashed her winning credentials as she cruised to the top spot in the women's quarter-finals at the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifier, streaming live on Olympics.com from Saturday's semi-finals.
Olympic silver medallist Rayssa Leal of Brazil reminded the field why she is the one to stop, as she qualified in first place during the women's quarter-finals at the 2023 WST Street Skateboarding event in Rome.
The 15-year-old, who entered the contest as the number one pre-seeded skater, signed off the quarter-finals with a score of 70.43 in her second run to finish the session three points clear of Japan's Akama Liz in second (67.31).
13-year-old Chloe Covell booked her place in the semi-finals by qualifying in third (65.42). She is one of two Australians to confirm a spot in the next round with Haylie Powell advancing through in 14th.
Japan once again affirmed its depth with six skaters from the country punching their ticket into the semis, including Olympic champion Nishiya Momiji who advanced through in fourth.
However, last year's winner Nakayama Funa is not on the list after revealing a broken collarbone injury when she dropped in. She opted to roll around the course to secure Paris 2024 ranking points but will not progress any further in the competition this week.
Elsewhere, Team USA will be pinning its hopes on Poe Pinson who was the only skater from the country to secure a place in the semis; the 18-year-old from Florida qualified in 11th spot. While Brazil will see familiar faces Pamela Rosa and Gabi Mazetto alongside Leal in the next round.
In addition to the title, Paris 2024 Olympic qualification ranking points are on the line for skateboarders competing in Rome.
The women's competition continues on Saturday with the semi-finals scheduled to get underway at 15:55 local time (UTC +2). The action will be available to stream live on Olympic Channel via Olympics.com.
