Some five weeks from Paris 2024, Japan's Nakayama Funa was back to business as she topped the women's street open qualifier at World Skate Games Italia 2024 on Tuesday (10 September).

Under the heat of the midday sun in Rome, Italy, the Olympic bronze medallist from Tokyo 2020 in 2021 cruised to the quarter-final in first place with a 71.46 effort.

Nakayama was one of seven Japanese skaters to advance. There was a mix of familiar faces, and new, as the Asian nation showed it's not letting loose its grip on the discipline any time soon.

Sugimoto Niko, 15, and Matsumoto Ibuki, 12, qualified inside the top five along with Ito Miyu and Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Nishiya Momiji who qualified in second and fourth respectively. Reigning world champion Oda Yumeka went through in 12th.

Also into the next round was a party of Paris 2024 Olympians. Brazil's Pamela Rosa, Spaniard Daniela Terol, and South Africa's Boipelo Awuah were among those to finish inside the cut.

Missing from the open qualifier were Paris 2024 Olympic medallists Yoshizawa Coco, Liz Akama, and Rayssa Leal who were able to sit out the action owing to their seeding.

They will enter the contest at the quarter-final stage, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday.

Before then, the men's open qualifier is penned for Wednesday, with 88 skaters set to drop in.
