Great Britain got their diving campaign off to a strong start after clinching gold in the mixed team event at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar on Friday (2 February).
Tom Daley, Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix, Scarlett Mew Jensen and Daniel Goodfellow combined for a total of 421.65 points to secure victory ahead of Mexico and Australia in second and third respectively.
It was a tussle for supremacy with Mexico for the Brits from the start.
Mexican divers Aranza Vazquez Montano (61.50) and Jahir Ocampo Marroquin (76.50) took an early lead in the first round after all 3m springboard dives had been completed.
But a strong response from Daley and Mew Jensen in the 3m springboard mixed synchro round (72.85) saw the Brits nip ahead.
Spendolini-Sirieix then held the lead after her 10m platform dive but a slight dip from Daley paired with a stunning forward dive with 4 1/2 somersaults in a pike position from Randal Willars Valdez - awarded 98.40 - saw the Mexicans lurch back in front.
Unbowed, Daley and Spendolini-Siriex responded with the highest-scoring 10m mixed synchro dive of the afternoon (76.80) to take back the advantage and too, the win.
The mixed team gold medal for Great Britain represents the first of these World Aquatics Championships and the first international medal for Daley since his two and a half year-long sabbatical from competition.
The People's Republic of China, who won the event last year in Fukuoka, Japan, did not have a team in the finals.
