Tech specialists Mikaela Shiffrin and Petra Vlhova are ready to renew their rivalry on Saturday (18 February) as they chase gold in the women's slalom at the 2023 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships .
The U.S. superstar has always medalled in the event at worlds (four golds, one bronze) and is looking for an unprecedented fifth title, while the Beijing 2022 gold medallist and discipline's globe holder Vlhova is eyeing to complete her set of medals in the event after winning silver in Cortina d'Ampezzo (2021) and bronze in Are (2019).
But Shiffrin and Vlhova are not the only ones who are chasing the crown of slalom queen. Find out below who are the other skiers to watch on Saturday.
Women's slalom: Medal Favourites
Mikaela Shiffrin (USA): This season the 27-year-old has restored her dominance in slalom and will be the woman to beat on Sunday in Meribel: out of nine World Cup starts, the American has stepped on the podium eight times and has collected five wins.
Petra Vlhova (SVK): The Slovak hasn't been at her absolute best this season, but she is still joint second in the slalom World Cup standings with one win (She beat Shiffrin in Flachau momentarily preventing her from breaking Lindsey Vonn's record) and four podiums.
Wendy Holdener (SUI): After 30 World Cup podiums without a victory, the 29-year-old Swiss finally clinched her first career win in slalom last November in Killington, USA, before adding another win in Sestriere, Italy, on 11 December. Holdener proved that she can rise to the occasion during major events having won silver in slalom at both Winter Olympics (2018) and worlds (2017).
Lena Duerr (GER): The experienced German skier, who was fourth at Beijing 2022, has reached the podium in the last three World Cup slaloms leading up to worlds. Two weeks ago she claimed her first-ever win in the discipline.
Anna Swenn Larsson (SWE): A silver medallist at the home worlds in Are four years ago, the 31-year-old shared her first World Cup win with Holdener in November. She's been consistently in the Top-6 so far this season and has also made the podium on three occasions.
