Swimming athletes to watch at Doha 2024

Great Britain have brought a strong squad for Doha 2024, headlined by breaststroke GOAT Adam Peaty.

The 29-year-old took a break from the sport after retaining his 100m breaststroke Olympic title at Tokyo 2020 and has suffered with mental health issues, but will probably compete in the 50 and 100m events as he continues his return to top form.

Joining him in Team GB is men’s 200m freestyle Olympic champion Tom Dean, former 50m free world champion Ben Proud, and versatile six-time Olympic medallist Duncan Scott.

Due to clashes with the college season, the United States have sent a small 18-swimmer team to Doha. Carson Foster is one of their leading lights and will be looking to upgrade his 400 individual medley silver medals from the past two World Championships, while also sealing a first 200m medley world title.

The top names in Australia’s male contingent are reigning 50m free world champion Cameron McEvoy, and former 400m free world champion Elijah Winnington.

Elsewhere, South Africa’s seasoned veteran Chad le Clos will be one of the favourites for gold in the men’s 200m butterfly, while former world record holder Hunter Armstrong will defend his men’s 50m backstroke title, while also hoping to win gold in the Olympic distance of 100m backstroke.

Kate Douglass enters five individual events

On the women’s side, keep an eye out for multi-event specialist Kate Douglass.

The 22-year-old Team USA athlete has entered five individual events, including her favoured 200 medley.

She will have stiff competition in the shorter sprints from evergreen Swede Sarah Sjostrom, who will defend her 50 fly and 50 free titles.

Hong Kong China’s two-time Olympic silver medallist Siobhan Haughey will compete in the 100 and 200m freestyle, while South African Olympic champion Tatjana Schoenmaker is the comfortable favourite for gold in the women’s 100m and 200m breaststroke.

Finally, watch out for New Zealand teenager Erika Fairweather in the women’s 400m free, who grabbed headlines in 2023 when she beat Summer McIntosh to bronze in last year’s World Championships.
