Biography

Sarah Sjostrom made her senior swimming debut in 2008 at the age of 14, and has since established herself as one of the greatest female sprinters of all time.

The Swede made her Olympic debut at Beijing 2008, and one year later she smashed the 100m butterfly World Record with a time of 56.06 en route to gold at the 2009 World Championships.

After failing to medal at London 2012, Sjostrom bounced back in style to win her nation's first ever female Olympic swimming title, the 100m fly, at the Rio 2016 Games. She also demonstrated her impressive versatility in Brazil, taking home 200m silver, and 100m bronze.

The 1993-born athlete is often praised for her mental strength, which was on full display at Tokyo 2020, when she secured 50m freestyle silver just months before the Games.

To date, Sjostrom has won 15 individual world titles across the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle , 50m butterfly, and 100m butterfly.

She is also the long course World Record holder in the 50m freestyle (23.67), 100m freestyle (51.71), 50m butterfly (24.43), and 100m butterfly (55.48).
