You can expect to see plenty of great football on the pitch at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games starting on 22 October in the capital of Chile, with eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams from across the Americas vying for victory in their respective tournaments.
Men’s football has been a part of every Pan Am Games since 1951, and Argentina has won the most championships with seven. The women’s football tournament started in 1999, and Brazil’s three wins make them the most decorated nation in the Americas.
What to expect from the men’s soccer tournament at Santiago 2023
The men’s tournament at the Pan Am Games is an under-22 competition and shows off the best young players in the participating nations. Argentina, the 2019 Pan Am Games champions, won’t be back to defend their title, so that opens the door for another team to win the championship.
Brazil heads into the tournament as one of the favourites having won gold on four previous occasions. They have been pooled with a young U.S. team in Group B that features up-and-coming players from the MLS, including defender Reed Baker-Whiting from the Seattle Sounders and midfielder Sergio Oregel from the Chicago Fire. Brazil and the U.S. will face off on the first day of group play.
Three-time winners Mexico and two-time champions Uruguay both compete in Group A where they will be joined by tournament hosts Chile as well as the Dominican Republic.

What to expect from the women’s soccer tournament at Santiago 2023
The United States hasn’t brought a women’s football team to the Pan Am Games since 2007. This time, a young team will take on Venezuela, Costa Rica and Argentina in Chile in Group B. The U.S. team will be made of players from the U-19 and U-20 teams who aren’t yet in college, because the NCAA season is underway for those players. The hope is that the young players will get worthwhile experience in facing the national teams of the other countries in the tournament. In Group B, the U.S. will face what is on paper its toughest test when they play Costa Rica on Wednesday, October 25.
Outside of the U.S., the two highest-ranked teams in the tournament are Mexico and Jamaica. Colombia, the defending champions, won't be at the tournament. The Mexican-Jamaican matchup kicks off group play on Sunday 22 October. Mexico is 36th and Jamaica is 37th in FIFA rankings, so we’re likely to see a tight game at the very beginning of the tournament.
