Starting October 21, U.S. swimmers will have a chance to test the waters at the Pan-American Games in Santiago, Chile. Though this team doesn’t have some of the top swimmers who starred at the world championships earlier this year, it does feature plenty of talented swimmers to watch. Get to know them here:
Brooks Curry
100m freestyle
Headlining Team USA is Olympic gold medalist Brooks Curry. He’s had a busy few years since winning gold with the 4x100m relay team at Tokyo 2020. Curry won three medals, including another relay gold, at the 2022 World Championships. At the TYR Pro Championships in July, Curry won two silvers and a bronze, showing his versatility as a freestyler.
Jay Litherland
400m IM, 400m freestyle
In Santiago, Jay Litherland is looking to add to his already full medal cabinet. At Tokyo 2020, Litherland won silver in the 400 individual medley. He also has a silver from the 2019 Worlds in the same race, and a freestyle relay bronze from 2017. At PanAms, Litherland will look to pick up speed and claim a gold in two races he is so comfortable with.
Jake Foster
100m backstroke, 200m backstroke
This past summer, Jake Foster had to make a big decision about his life. Head to the medical school where he had been accepted after graduating from Texas, or keep swimming and try to make the Paris 2024 Olympics. He decided to defer medical school for a year, giving him more time to swim for the U.S. and reach his ultimate goal of going to the Olympics. Swimming at the PanAms will help him map out plans for his very exciting upcoming year.
Zane Grothe
200 free
A mainstay of Team USA’s freestylers, Zane Grothe brings with him a wealth of experience to Santiago. He is a bronze medalist from the 2017 World Championships, and he has three medals from the Pan Pacifics in 2018. With Santiago, Grothe has a chance to show what he can still bring to the pool.
